Supersize Me – Is Fast Food Bad for Losing Weight?

eat fast food and lose weight

Fast food establishments are everywhere and people believe them to be the source of their weight problem but is that really true?

An article written back in 28 May 2004 by Bill Muller with the Arizona Republic around the Documentary called “Supersize Me” which stated that :

” The filmmaker is here to make a point and fry McDonald’s in the process. There’s nothing approaching balance – in Spurlock’s defense, no one at the restaurant chain would talk – and he’s telling us something everyone already knows: Fast food is bad for you. “

east fast food and lose weight

When watching the documentary you could clearly see that the whole purpose of the documentary was to make McDonalds look bad and it made people think that they would be fat and unhealthy if they ate there.

In the movie Spurlock would only eat the Supersize Option when prompted to do so however in the real world McDonald’s does actually have a lot of healthy options available to people.

Fast Food Does Have Healthy Options to Keep the Calories Down

They have salads and also options like grilled chicken that isn’t fried in oil. They also have water and ‘diet’ version of sodas which have less calories but he never took those options.

So I guess he did prove the point that if you don’t pay attention to what you are eating and just eat anything from the menu you can put on a lot of weight and be unhealthy.

But really that is no different than eating anywhere and does not apply solely to fast food.

The real message that should be gained from this movie is that people need to take time to educate themselves on how to eat property and how to navigate menus correctly.

If they do then they can successfully eat at a McDonalds or any restaurant and be much healthier and not be overweight.

Physical Activity is Just As Important to Eating Healthy

I think a bigger concern is the lack of movement since the invention of the computer back in the 1980’s should be of much more concern.

People are moving less and less everyday because our jobs require us to sit in front of computers all day more and more. Everyday people become more and more sedentary

You combine this with a super unhealthy diet with high level of calories and you have a recipe for disaster. However, if you only focus on one aspect of it then you are only treating have of the problem.

Eat Fast Food and Still Meet Your Weight Loss Goals

In closing I would say that if you want to lose weight then it’s not a bad idea to follow Spurlock’s advice from the movie and not eat the unhealthy options from the menu as this will be almost impossible to meet your weight loss goals.

However, if you were to only order the salad (without the dressing) each day from McDonalds then you would have much to worry about.

We all have very busy lives and can’t be expected to not eat fast food because it is the way society is right now that there will be times when we just need to hurry up and get some food because we don’t have time.

I think a better approach to for people to educate themselves on weight loss and how eat correctly so they can eat where every they want, then modify the choices a little make them healthy, and then still meet their weight loss goals.

But then also put a focus on moving more to increase the calorie expenditure throughout the day.

The combination of these two things could literally reverse the obesity problem in America.
